Contemporaray Art Museum of San Rocco
Trapani
BRIEF DESCRIPTION
Contemporaray Art Museum of San Rocco, housed in the former convent of the same name, is an important museum for contemporary art. The building, abandoned for more than 30 years, was reopened in 2012 as a cultural centre and museum. Its history dates back to the second half of the 16th century with the arrival of Franciscan friars during a plague epidemic. After the Unification of Italy, it housed the provincial post office and, later, various public offices and schools. Following careful restoration, the original sacred structure was brought back to light.
THIS PLACE IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE
The Art Museum is distinguished by its unique approach to contemporary art, presented within a sacred setting. The heart of the collection is the “DiART Diocesan Collection of Contemporary Religious Art,” founded in 2004, which includes around 200 works by approximately 130 artists from 22 countries. Additional collections have been added over time, contributing to the museum’s growth. Notable artists include Carla Accardi, Alberto Gianquinto, Turi Simeti, Adrian Paci, Minjung Kim, and Jung Uei Jung.
