The Tramontana
Wals
Trapani
BRIEF DESCRIPTION
The Tramontana Wals are ancient defensive fortifications of Trapani, dating back to the period of Spanish rule. Completed in 1545, they were built to protect the city from external attacks, particularly from Saracen pirates. The walls begin at Piazza Ex Mercato del Pesce, which, as the name suggests, once housed the fish market and is now a lively square. From here, the path continues along the coast, where the imposing Bastione Imperiale, also known as Bastione Sant'Anna, stands. This stretch of wall, part of Trapani’s original quadrangular defence system, includes remains of earlier structures and reflects the city’s ongoing need to defend itself from sea-based attacks.
