Cambiaso Villa

BRIEF DESCRIPTION
Villa Cambiaso is located in the heart of Savona, nestled in a 2,500-square-meter Italian-style park that preserves its charm and memory. Its elegant rooms are adorned with frescoes, stucco work, and period furnishings.
These rooms hosted illustrious figures such as Napoleon Bonaparte in 1796. In the 19th century, the villa became the personal refuge of Pope Pius VII during his imprisonment; he gathered in prayer in a chapel within the villa.
In 1822, on the occasion of the marriage between Bianca Maria Colonna and Giovanni Battista Cambiaso, the pontiff gifted a magnificent fountain, which can still be seen at the entrance today. From 1842, the villa officially became the property of the Cambiaso family. After suffering damage caused by natural disasters, it was restored in the early 20th century, regaining its original spirit.
Today, the Villa Cambiaso Museum Association works to promote a range of cultural activities. Many of the events involve various artistic expressions, from exhibitions by national and international artists to concerts of classical music, jazz, opera, and theatre.
THIS PLACE IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE
The villa is the custodian of an intangible heritage that links art and esoteric culture. The stained-glass windows and Art Nouveau decorations by artists associated with Florentine Freemasonry suggest a hidden and mysterious identity. At a time when Freemasonry was persecuted, Villa Cambiaso served as a safe haven for free and symbolic expressions.
