Balbi Chapel

savona

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

Originally part of Villa Balbi, a 16th-century mansion that first belonged to the Beccalla family and later passed to the Balbi family, the chapel survived the demolition of the complex in the 1930s, when the villa was razed to make way for new housing. The chapel remained protected in the heart of the newly urbanised area and was used for various purposes over the decades. Over time, its frescoes and floors were covered and forgotten until the 1980s, when progressive restoration efforts brought them back to light. Today, the chapel is owned by the Savona White Cross, which has recently reopened it to the public. Through a petition, the FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano) included it in the list of “Places of the Heart” to help protect and support it.

THIS PLACE IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE

The Balbi Chapel is a fine example of urban Baroque sacred architecture. Its vaults and interior walls are adorned with frescoes of remarkable chromatic intensity, attributed to the 18th-century Savona painter Agostino Ratti. The chapel’s value lies not only in its artistic beauty but also in its story of survival; a reflection of Savona’s tenacious spirit and its capacity for renewal, preserving and rediscovering its symbols even in the most difficult times.
