Villa Durazzo-Centurione

santa Margherita Ligure

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

Villa Durazzo-Centurione, decorated with rustic ashlar and mouldings, is an icon of traditional Ligurian architecture and a cultural symbol of the town. The complex, which includes both the Durazzo-Centurione and San Giacomo villas, is well known for its 17th-century park and Italian-style garden. Located on top the hill that once separated the hamlets of Pescino and Corte, the building is a perfect example of a classic Genoese villa. Archival records confirm the existence of a “tower house” on the site in earlier times, but it was in the late 17th century, after it passed to the Durazzo family, that it took shape as a vacation residence. Later, in 1821, the complex became the property of the Centurione Princes, who expanded it significantly. Inside, the villa is adorned with paintings, frescoes, and trompe-l'œil works by 17th- and 18th-century Genoese artists. In 1919, the property was acquired by Alfredo Chierichetti, who restored it and enhanced the park with new plants, bushes and sculptural features, including statues, vases, and fountains.

THIS PLACE IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE

The garden, which stretches across a large hill and has a spectacular view of the Gulf of Tigullio, harmoniously combines the tradition of the Italian garden with the charm of an English woodland. The original citrus grove, planted by the Durazzo family, forms the historical heart of the garden. It is enriched with many other types of plants, such as box hedges and 19th-century camellias, as well as exotic species like Cycas revoluta and Encephalartos, introduced in the 20th century when the park was expanded. This blend creates a fascinating fusion of Mediterranean and tropical flora. A true corner of tranquillity is the “Secret Garden of the Centurione Princes”, a hidden heaven that still preserves the intimate atmosphere of the 19th century. Thanks to its botanical richness, the garden has been included in the list of Great Italian Gardens.

TODAY

Since 1973, the complex has hosted private and cultural events, exhibitions, and international congresses, while also offering a green space that is accessible to everyone. Inside the villa is the Vittorio Giovanni Rossi Art Museum, dedicated to the local writer and journalist.
