Church of san Lorenzo
santa Margherita Ligure
BRIEF DESCRIPTION
The church, now in Baroque style and located in the San Lorenzo della Costa neighbourhood, was built on the site of an earlier Romanesque structure. The interior is divided into three naves, adorned with elegant finishes and gilded stucco work, and enriched by a series of side chapels.
The masterpiece of the church is the Triptych of St. Andrew, a Flemish work from 1499, attributed to followers of the school of Hans Memling. Two other important artworks housed here are the Martyrdom of St. Lawrence and the Holy Family, both by Luca Cambiaso.
THIS PLACE IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE
In addition to the significant artworks inside, it is also worth noting the War Memorial outside the church. This travertine monument features a white marble statue depicting a fallen man, commemorating the soldiers who died for their country. Every year, on the 10th of August, the community celebrates the Feast of San Lorenzo, a tradition that honours the church’s patron saint with religious ceremonies and festivities involving the whole local population.
