THE CERVARA DI

PORTOFINO

santa Margherita Ligure

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

La Cervara, which stands high above the sea, is a Benedictine monastery founded in 1361 and dedicated to St. Jerome. Over the centuries, the monastery is said to have welcomed many important and renowned historical figures. The complex, rich in history, has undergone several phases, including the suppression of monastic orders in the 18th century and a long period of neglect. Elegance and refinement emerge from the details of the cloister’s black-and-white-banded columns, reminiscent of the Pisan Romanesque style, as well as the magnificent Carrara marble floors. The cloister and church were restored under the supervision of conservator Pinin Brambilla in the 1990s. La Cervara has been classified as an Italian national monument since 1912, and today it is managed by FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano), which is responsible for its preservation and enhancement.

THIS PLACE IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE

Its uniqueness lies in its extraordinary location, which offers breathtaking views of the sea and surrounding coastline, and in the perfect fusion of history, architecture, and nature. The Cervara Italian garden is one of the few examples that directly overlooks the sea, featuring a rich botanical variety that ranges from exotic plants to traditional Mediterranean types. These paths include one called From the Sylvaria to the Italian Garden another The Monastic Presence on the Mount of Portofino and finally The Tapestries and Furniture.
