Meistri e Mestè Exhibition Hall
santa Margherita Ligure
BRIEF DESCRIPTION
The Meistri e Mestè Exhibition Hall, located in the Municipal Library, is a landmark celebrating Santa Margherita Ligure's craft traditions. Situated in the heart of the city, this space displays objects and creations that tell the story of ancient crafts passed down through generations. Visitors can also admire historical photographs and listen to interviews that share the story of the place and its artisanal heritage.
Each year, the hall hosts bobbin lace classes, a traditional art form deeply rooted in the local culture. These courses offer a chance to learn the secrets of lace-making techniques, helping to preserve a practice that is an integral part of the gulf’s identity.
THIS PLACE IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE
The tradition of bobbin lace dates back to the 16th century, when Ligurian women, already skilled in weaving fishing nets, began weaving threads while waiting for their husbands to return from sea. Sitting by the shore, they created lace. Over the years, bobbin lace became a well-established tradition, involving a very intricate process of thread weaving. Those who practice it demonstrate incredible skill, crafting delicate lace patterns through a complex technique—sometimes requiring an entire day of work for just a few inches. Today, several organizations are dedicated to promoting this tradition, which is currently being proposed to be included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
