Museum of the History

of Medicine (MUSME)

Padua

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

MUSME, or the Museum of the History of Medicine, was opened in 2015 to exhibit and narrate the evolution of medicine from an ancient discipline to a modern science, emphasising the significant role of the Paduan Medical School. The museum is housed in a 15th-century building that was the first hospital in Padua. In this historic place, for the first time in the world, medical students in the second half of the 16th century began to learn directly by examining patients in bed—consequently laying the foundations of modern medical education.

THIS PLACE IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE

The MUSME is of great importance because it revolutionize the concept of a scientific museum, involving visitors in an active and comprehensive way. In fact, it combines the traditional collection of artifacts with interactive elements that immerse visitors in a historical narrative. The exhibition route is designed to suit different age groups: it offers games for children, as well as in-depth content for adults and scholars. The importance of the museum is further underscored by its focus on Padua’s central role in the clinical revolution, with the Paduan Medical School making significant contributions to modern medicine.
