Gavriil Romanovich Derzhavin
Among the names associated with the Tambov region an honorable place is occupied by the name of the remarkable Russian poet, governor of the city of Tambov in 1786-1788 Gavriil Romanovich Derzhavin, who made a great contribution into the development of the cultural, scientific and political sector of the province. Achievements of Derzhavin include the development of the state treasury regulations, improvement of the urban outlook of Tambov, topographic study of the Tambov province, solutions a wide range of social issues. State potential of Derzhavin 's initiatives on the development of ship navigation throughout rivers of the Tambov province, on reforming financial and customs systems was of high importance for Tambov region. The city has a street named after Derzhavin and the university named after him.
Sergei Rachmaninoff
The creative life of the great Russian composer, pianist, conductor Sergei Rachmaninoff is traditionally associated with the Tambov land, with the village of Ivanovka in Tambov region where the most of his world known compositions were written. Today the Ivanovka Museum is the world's largest center for broadcasting the Russian cultural heritage associated with the life and work of S.V. Rachmaninov. Ivanovka hosts music contents, concerts and theater assemblies. International music festivals named after S.V. Rachmaninov attract musicians from different countries to Tambov for many years. The Tambov State Music and Pedagogical Institute was named after him.
The Tambov wolf is your comrade!
Tambov is mentioned in popular expression "The Tambov wolf is your comrade!" There are several versions of this expression. One of them has a socio-economic background. Thus, Tambov peasants, who went to the capital for a work in the 19th century, took up any job and asked for it several times less than the locals, which contributed to the knockdown of payment. Moscow workers did not like the agility of their competitors. Therefore, seeing the people from Tambov, they said: "Oh, the Tambov wolves have arrived." Moreover, this expression has spread into the cinema and was used in the most famous and popular Russian films finally connecting the image of a wolf with Tambov.

The Tambov region is associated with the name of Ivan Michurin - Russian biologist and breeder, author of many varieties of fruit and berry crops and, of course, Michurin apples. The mansion of the Merchant M.V. Aseev
The mansion of the merchant M.V. Aseev with an interesting history of its construction and biography of its owner was designed by the outstanding Russian architect Lev Kekushev. He was a famous manufacturer, philanthropist and the founder of the Art Nouveau style in Russia who managed to bring the cultural and public forces of the city all together. The construction of the Aseev house in the Art Nouveau style in 1906 determined the stylistic direction in the work of many local architects and the image of the city. The mansion demonstrated the introduction of the most progressive building technologies: glass vaults using Falconier glass blocks, artistic aluminum casting, machine wood carving. This cultural monument is important not only for professional architects, but also for ordinary people who appreciate the history and culture of Russia.
The Cathedral of the Saviour's Transfiguration
The Cathedral of the Saviour's Transfiguration is the main church of Tambov. It has been the seat of the Tambov Eparchy of the Russian Orthodox Church almost since its inception. The original wooden church honoring the Feast of the Transfiguration was built in 1636 — the same year when the town of Tambov was founded. The first bishops decided to replace the wooden church with a bigger stone building in the late Baroque style. Construction works started in 1694 at the instigation of Bishop Pitirim. The church contained the tombs of St. Pitirim and other local bishops. It boasted several precious icons, some of them painted by Pitirim. Between 1929 and 1991, the church was closed to worship and used as a regional museum. The free-standing Neoclassical belltower was constructed in the 1810s and it used to be the tallest building in the Governorate of Tambov.
The embankment of the River Tsna
The embankment of the River Tsna is the most beautiful street in Tambov and one of the favorite tourist routes for locals and guests strolling slowly along the picturesque and cozy areas, passing by monuments, churches and cathedrals, fountains and bridges, curved stairs, shady terraces, observation decks with gorgeous views and fancy lanterns illuminating this luxury promenade. The embankment of the River Tsna is considered to be the "visiting card" of the city of Tambov.
