The Rocca of Vignola

Modena

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

The Rocca, one of Vignola’s most recognisable landmarks, represents a perfect blend of history and culture. It is a building that has evolved over time from a medieval fortress, as documented in 12th-century sources, into a Renaissance residence by the early 15th century. On the ground and first floors of the Rocca, you can still admire 15th-century frescoes recounting episodes from the lives of the owning family. The Hall of the Pavilion is especially famous for its scenes of weddings and hanging gardens, offering a fascinating glimpse into life at the time. Today, the Rocca is not only a historic monument but also a vibrant cultural hub.

THIS PLACE IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE

The Rocca di Vignola houses a chapel richly decorated with a cycle of frescoes from the early 15th century depicting the Stories of Christ. As art critic A.C. Quintavalle noted, the chapel, which is an authentic gem of late Gothic art, “remains one of the most intense and vivid experiences among Emilian works of the period.”.
