\n\t\t\t\t\t\tThe Tyrrhenian Sea<\/b>, the western part of the Mediterranean Sea, extends from the Italian peninsula to the coasts of Corsica and Sardinia, including the Sardinian Channel.\nIt can be subdivided into the Upper Tyrrhenian Sea<\/b>, which stretches from the Tuscan archipelago to Corsica, and the Lower Tyrrhenian Sea<\/b>, which stretches from Lower Lazio to Sicily, including the Sardinian channel. The name 'Tyrrhenian' originates from the ancient Greeks, who referred to the Etruscans as Tirreni. The Etruscans once occupied territories extending from northern Italy to the mouth of the river Magra in Liguria and southwards to Campania, also known as Etruria Campana. References to the Tyrrhenian Sea can be traced back to Greek authors like Hesiod and in the Homeric hymn to Dionysus.
