\n Welcome to this picturesque port<\/strong>, located in the Tigullio Gulf<\/strong>.\n <\/p>\n\n

\n Here, a crystal-clear sea<\/strong>, scenic routes<\/strong> leading to breathtaking views<\/strong>,\n and the chance to discover ancient-rooted craftsmanship<\/strong> await you.\n The authentic flavours<\/strong> you can taste here communicate the union of sea and land<\/strong>!\n <\/p>\n\n

\n In the 6th century<\/strong>, it was a small settlement inhabited mainly by fishermen<\/strong>.\n From the Middle Ages<\/strong> onward, it developed into two main hamlets: Pescino<\/strong> and Corte<\/strong>,\n between which local rivalries<\/strong> were not uncommon.\n <\/p>\n\n

\n In the first half of the 13th century<\/strong>, the territory of Santa Margherita Ligure<\/strong>\n was conquered by the Republic of Genoa<\/strong>, becoming part of its political and military domain<\/strong>.\n <\/p>\n\n

\n At the end of the 18th century<\/strong>, during the French occupation<\/strong>,\n the village and surrounding area became part of the Tigullio Gulf department<\/strong>\n within the newly established Ligurian Republic<\/strong>.\n <\/p>\n\n

\n At the same time, the area was divided into two parts, called \u201ccanton\u201d<\/strong>,\n and associated with the two major parishes<\/strong>.\n Relations between the two hamlets were marked by ongoing conflict between the \u201cMargheritini\u201d<\/strong>\n (the parish of Santa Margherita) and the \u201cGiacomini\u201d<\/strong> (the one of San Giacomo).\n <\/p>\n\n

\n Among the specialties, a must is the famous Ligurian focaccia<\/strong>, made from a simple dough<\/strong> and known for its\n soft yet crunchy texture<\/strong>. An equally beloved variant is the focaccia of Recco<\/strong>,\n which is much thinner<\/strong> and filled with a creamy cheese<\/strong>.\n This delicacy is best enjoyed hot, fresh out of the oven<\/strong>.\n Both can be tasted at the two historic bakeries: Fior di Ponti<\/strong> and Pinamonti<\/strong>.\n <\/p>\n\n

\n Just a few kilometers from Santa Margherita Ligure<\/strong> are some other charming destinations<\/strong>.\n One of these is Recco<\/strong>, renowned for its delightful focaccia<\/strong>.\n Nearby is Camogli<\/strong>, a picturesque fishing village<\/strong> with a colorful harbor<\/strong>.\n Each May, Camogli hosts the Sagra del Pesce<\/strong>, one of the area\u2019s most popular food and cultural festivals<\/strong>.\n <\/p>\n\n

\n A particularly scenic route is the San Rocco \u2013 Punta Chiappa \u2013 San Fruttuoso Trail<\/strong>.\n This challenging path<\/strong>, with significant elevation changes<\/strong>,\n goes through Portofino Park<\/strong> and leads to the Abbey of San Fruttuoso<\/strong>.\n <\/p>\n\n

\n The site is not only breathtaking<\/strong> but also tied to a legend<\/strong>:\n according to tradition, a dragon<\/strong> once threatened the bay until an angel<\/strong>,\n accompanying Justin and Procopius<\/strong>, disciples of San Fruttuoso<\/strong>, vanquished the beast,\n making it possible to build a church<\/strong> in honor of their friend.\n <\/p>\n\n

\n The abbey<\/strong>, built between the 10th and 11th centuries<\/strong> and once home to Benedictine monks<\/strong>,\n is a medieval gem<\/strong> nestled within the Portofino Regional Natural Park<\/strong>.\n Restored by the Doria family<\/strong>, it was given to FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano)<\/strong> in 1983<\/strong>.\n <\/p>\n\n
